Growing Strong Women
Today the Softcup team all watched an inspring video, and we can't wait to see the documentary in full.
I really appreciated that the women in the video talk not just about how harmful the media is in raising today's girls, but how to fix the problem. Because clearly, we can't simply stop our girls from watching TV and using Facebook. In particular, they brought up the importance of mentoring.
Mentoring is something we can all do. Whether we mentor a daughter, niece, sister, or stranger, we are actively improving the world. Here are some ways that you can bring mentorship into your life. Pay it forward!
- Oprah's got a great article on mentoring teens in your life. Her tips include helping your teen pinpoint her passion; encourage quiet time and meditation; promote a healthy lifestyle; hug your teen often; and get to know her. These are things that often get lost in our busy, day-to-day lives.
- Want to use your mentoring skills for a non-profit organization? Check these out:
- Girls Inc. - "inspiring girls to be strong, smart and bold." Girls Inc. provides a local network of organizations throughout the U.S. where girls can learn about financial literacy, resisting peer pressure, take action in their communities, learn math and science skills, and more.
- Step Up Women's Network - connects girls and mentors.
- Global Girl Media - empowers girls with journalistic training so they can add their voices to the media.
There are many ways to get involved. Whether you're volunteering for a non-profit, or simply giving some sound career or growing-up advice to a girl, you're providing some much needed balance to that girl, and letting her know that her value comes from within, not from what she looks like.
